Projection Mapping
Creative Direction
For the 2018 edition of Culture Night in Belfast the organisers wanted a projection mapping show on St. Anne’s Cathedral in the city centre. They wanted the show to feature multiple elements; what Culture Night is all about, the 10 year anniversary of Culture Night, and PowerNI’s sponsorship of the event. This naturally led to the decision to divide the show into three sections.
The first section focussed on the various elements of Culture Night; music, dance and art. I created various scenes with different looks based on pop-art, surrealism, graffiti, watercolour and impressionism.
The second section focussed on PowerNI and it’s history in Northern Ireland. The concept I settled on was showcasing various pieces of technology that required electricity throughout the decades. These included: lightbulbs in 1930s, radios in 1940s, jukeboxes in 1950s, televisions in 1960s, disco halls in 1970s, video games in 1980s, boom boxes in 1990s, computers in 2000s and green energy in 2010s. Each of the scenes were accompanied by a classic song from that decade.
The final scene focussed on the 10th anniversary of Culture Night in Belfast. The client had specific artwork developed for the festival which I separated into individual elements which could then be animated. I also added in a section featuring the word ‘Love’ in various languages, which was meant to reflect the various cultures living and working together in Belfast.
